We know how special our Reading Room is and how it will promote the development of our students’ very important literacy skills. We have seen our students using the comfy chairs and enjoying the calming, relaxing atmosphere to read fiction books before, after or during school. However after a term’s use we felt it was time to celebrate this unique facility with an official opening day. The Big Book Swap and Literary Day on the 23rd of January did just that. Our own celebrated Bloomsbury author Jenny McLachlan agreed to spend the day with us, presenting a very funny talk to all Year 7s, followed by a lucky group of students collaborating with Jenny in workshops to develop their literary and creative writing skills. Lunch time saw the official opening, attended by staff, students, parents, governors, local dignitaries, other interested parties and press. This was a true moment to celebrate one of the special aspects of UCTC.
Along-side the cutting of the ribbon by Jenny the winners of the design competition were announced. This being the culmination of a term long initiative created to engage students with their space by designing some aspects of it. These designs will be taken forward and enhance the decoration and ambiance of our unique space. The overall winner of our Reading Room design competition was Marvella Horthy from 7N who produced a fantastic 3D Model that was full of ideas and inspiration. Designs and design ideas from Izzy Sutton Smith 8D, Elizabeth Robinson 8M, Kiera Radloff 7N, Gemma Downing 7C, Molly Shorter 7M and Georgia Whitton 8U were all highly commended and runners up were Georgia Wilce 8K, Emily Sweet 8D, Ben Williams 7D, Toby Whales 7D, Maisie Morey 8N, Ayla Jones 7M, Jess Molesworth 7C and Heidi Lane 8I.
Thank you to all who attended and all who have been involved in the process from as long ago as last summer.
